It was my birthday on Friday. That’s not part of my list because I’ve gone into my late twenties where apparently I was supposed to have been a world wide recognised… something. Instead my body is aging (found my first silver hair but we will call that hair glitter) and I’m still sat here waiting for the realisation that i’m a responsible (can’t say that word without saying ‘HA’) adult and although each year I get older, wiser and happier I cannot seem to want to celebrate my declining youth. I may only be 26 but sometimes I feel like I’m turning into a Nana – a cool one though.
That being said I’m annoyingly festive and despite getting older, December is the best time of the year and here is why:
I’m not even going to explain why but the combination of cheese and red wine is just… I fucking love December. Ok this isn’t just a December thing but somehow it seems less like I have an alcohol problem if this season justifies drinking ALL of the wine.
2. Fairy lights
A girls best friend and no I’m not a member of Tumblr. I’ve already got my lovely husband to agree to fairy lights all year in the living room AND the bedroom. So again, not just a December thing as of this year.
3. Christmas Jumpers
Now this IS something I keep strictly for the 1st December all the way til new years. Tacky but adorable jumpers that light up and that light up my life.
4. Sing at a Carol Service
Don’t care if I’m the only person singing, I bloody love a Christmas Carol. I went last week IN NOVEMBER and didn’t regret it. I even told Jamie to piss off and buy some hotdogs whilst I joined in with the singers. If anybody in my area are going to any local hospitals this December to go carol singing then let me know because I’ll be all over that shit.
5. Oh Christmas Tree
A tree you put in your living room and decorate over the festive season. I don’t know why we do this but it’s bloody glorious!
6. Visit Santa’s Grotto
Now this is perfect if you have children or any young relatives. Last year we went and I honestly think it was the REAL SANTA! Always lovely to get a photo of the little one completely fascinated by Santa – or frightened to tears. Either way, capturing the moment is perfect.
Yes, I’m one of those Will Ferell fans and no I’m not sorry.
“I’M IN LOVE, I’M IN LOVE AND I DON’T CARE WHO KNOWS IT”
Because I get to make some delicious food with my little boy and then we get to EAT IT. MAINLY ME.
9. Christmas Books
I told you I’m a Nana. There is nothing better than reading a festive flick, sipping on some hot chocolate whilst wearing fuzzy socks and being surrounded by Christmas scented candles. Because my hobbit is equally fascinated by books, he too has a bunch of festive story books which I get to read to him every day!
The gifts, Dexter’s book countdown, crafts, decorations, advent calendars, cookies, walking through town and looking at the lights, Santa’s Grotto, the music, films, happiness, giving to the poor, giving to your friends and family, singing – it’s a time to be truly thankful and a time to spread joy. We should be doing so anyway but Christmas reminds us of that and gives us a bloody good excuse to. My son has well and truly brought the magic back and there’s nothing like it! So many fun things to do this month with my hobbit before Father Christmas visits.
Oh, and if I were to write a list about things I hate about December it would be this:
1. Elf on the damn shelf
I don’t like seeing millions of pictures of that creepy fucker first thing in the morning. Dexter can enjoy it all he likes but I won’t be inflicting creepy doll fear onto anybody else on Facebook or Instagram. You’re welcome.
Happy December everybody!
